Foldr for Windows

Windows app – Error installing updates or when checking for updates

Introduction

An issue has been identified that affects Foldr for Windows 3.6.0 and 3.7.0 which results in the app’s built-in update mechanism in the app being non-functional and displaying an error.

The app’s update option is accessed by right-clicking on the Foldr icon in the system tray and then selecting ‘Check for updates’.

Please note that this issue only affects the app’s update option highlighted above and does not affect devices where app updates are deployed using other methods, such as manual FoldrSetup.exe or FoldrSetup.msi download and install, Winget, or central deployment methods such as Group Policy or Intune etc.

Earlier version of the Foldr app, such as 3.2.0 area also not affected by this issue and can update directly to 3.8.0 or later using the built-in update option.

Symptom

Where Foldr versions 3.6.0 or 3.7.0 are installed, when the user clicks Check for updates, and selects install, immediately after the update package has downloaded the following error is displayed with the text:

Install update
There was an error, please try again.

Cause

This issue is caused by Foldr 3.6.0 and 3.7.0 using incompatible versions of two files that are used when installing app updates:

BouncyCastle.cryptography.dll
FoldrUpdater.dll

These files reside in the app installation directory and affect updating beyond either 3.6.0 or 3.7.0 to a later release.

Solution

To resolve this issue, the user or administrator can use one of the options below:

  • Install Foldr for Windows 3.8.0 or later directly over the top of versions 3.6.0 or 3.7.0.  Download the FoldrSetup.exe setup file and run the installer.
  • Uninstall Foldr for Windows 3.6.0 or 3.7.0, then restart the computer (important), then finally install Foldr for Windows 3.8.0 or later
  • IT administrators can deploy Foldr for Windows 3.8.0 (or later) using their usual update procedure for their app deployment platform (Winget, Group Policy, MDM etc)
